Sciotoville Community School

Sciotoville Community School is a K–12 alternative school serving 373 students at 224 Marshall St in Portsmouth, Ohio (Scioto County), and it is unusual in one big way: it is also its own district, the Sciotoville Community School district, meaning a single building makes up the entire local school system. No other schools are located within 20 miles, so the only benchmark available for this school is the Ohio state average.

Against that state average, the school is currently below the mark in all 20 reported assessments, by an average of about 30.7 points — and that gap has widened every year since 2022-23, when it was 18.9 points. In 2022-23 the school actually beat the state on five assessments; in 2025-26 it beats the state on none. The graduation rate has fallen for three straight years, from 97.1% to 83.3%, and chronic absenteeism has stayed above 40% for five straight years (42.2% most recently), with last year's improvement partly reversed. Class sizes have also loosened in the wrong direction: the student-to-teacher ratio rose from 9.6 to 12.0 in two years, about 25%.

The picture is not uniformly weak. English II and American Government perform near state level, Algebra I hit a four-year high of 33.3% this year, and 3rd-grade ELA reached a four-year high of 52.4%. The deepest problems sit in middle-school math and science and in Geometry, which averaged 8.1% over four years, and results generally slip as students move up through the grades. Two cautions for parents: grade-level cohorts here are small, so single-year percentages can swing widely and shouldn't be read as precise, and no free/reduced-price lunch data is reported, while per-student spending is only available for 2018-19 ($7,848).
