Summary:
Canal Winchester Middle School is the only middle school in the Canal Winchester Local district, serving grades 6 through 8 to about 886 students — roughly 295 per grade — at 7155 Parkview Dr in Canal Winchester, a mid-size suburban community just southeast of Columbus. With a 14:1 student-teacher ratio and no comparable building in the district, this is a single-school profile rather than a comparison: the district's middle-grades numbers are essentially the school's own numbers restated.
The school's strongest results are in reading and writing. Seventh-grade English language arts reached 77.2% proficient — the highest grade-level score in the data and 14.5 points above the Ohio average, up 6.7 points from the prior year. Every one of the nine assessments reported beat the state in both years, an 18-for-18 record. Math is consistently solid, running 5 to 8 points above the state in each grade, though its average (58.9%) trails the ELA average (67.8%) by nearly 9 points. Accelerated math students performed exceptionally on end-of-course exams — Algebra I at 98.9% then 100%, and Geometry at 100% in both years — but these exams are taken only by a select group of advanced students, so they say more about the school's accelerated track than about overall math performance. The school ranks 346th of 1,046 Ohio middle schools, in the top third, holding steady after a jump from the 57th to the 67th percentile the year before.
Two things are worth watching. Eighth-grade science fell 8.3 points, from 73.2% to 64.9%, the steepest decline in the file, cutting its lead over the state from +10.2 to +3.7. Chronic absenteeism sits at 17.4%, slightly better than the district's 18.1% but still about 1 in 6 students. Note also that poverty and spending context is missing or dated — free/reduced lunch is unreported and per-student spending figures come from 2018-19.
