Summary:

Mentor Exempted Village is served by two middle schools — Memorial Middle School and Shore Middle School — both covering grades 6 through 8 and together enrolling roughly 1,604 students. Each school carries a 4-star state rating in every year reported, matching a district that sits in the 78th percentile of Ohio districts. Both schools face real academic challenges, yet both consistently outperform the state.

Memorial Middle School is the stronger performer on test scores. It ranks 131st of 1,046 Ohio middle schools — the 87th percentile, or top 13% statewide — and in 2025-26 it exceeded its own district average in all eight tested areas, a clean sweep Shore does not match. Its 8th-grade math proficiency of 80.2% is the highest non-EOC score in the data, and it posted 100% proficiency in Algebra I in both years. Shore Middle School is more the steady improver: its state rank has climbed three years running (295, then 280, then 274), and its Algebra I results (98.6% in 2025-26, 100% in 2024-25) beat the district by about 20 points.

For parents, the most useful comparison is the spread between the two. The widest divide is 8th-grade math: Memorial at 80.2% versus Shore at 61.2%, a gap that grew sharply this year, with Memorial up 14.3 points while Shore slipped 1.7. Reading and language arts at grade 7 is where the schools sit closest together (82.8% and 80.1%), and both are near the district’s 81.6%. Note that Algebra I results reflect a small advanced cohort, not the full 8th-grade class. Attendance is the shared soft spot: both schools exceed the district’s 16.1% chronic absenteeism rate, at 18.0% for Memorial and 20.7% for Shore. Shore also serves a higher share of students from low-income families and reports slightly larger classes.
