Coldwater Exempted Village

Coldwater Exempted Village is a small Ohio district serving 1,476 students across three schools — Coldwater Elementary School (K–4, 667 students), Coldwater Middle School (5–8, 429 students), and Coldwater High School (9–12, 380 students). All three sit on a single campus at 310 N 2nd St, and Coldwater Exempted Village as a whole ranks 69th of 773 Ohio districts (91st percentile, 5 stars).

The middle school is the district's flagship and its most consistent performer, holding 5 stars in all three years and never ranking below the top 100 in Ohio. Its Algebra I End-of-Course proficiency was 100%, roughly 38 points above the state, and it beats the state by an average of about 23 points across tested subjects. The elementary school is also strong but cooling: after two years at 5 stars and the 92nd percentile, it slipped to 4 stars and the 86th percentile — driven mainly by a 9.7-point drop in 3rd grade math, while 4th grade math actually improved. The high school has the highest ceiling and the most volatility, reaching the 93rd percentile and 5 stars before settling at 4 stars, and it posts the district's only 100% graduation rate alongside its highest chronic absenteeism.

Two patterns stand out for families. First, math is the district's comparative advantage — middle school math margins over the state average about +31 points versus +18 for English language arts, and high school Geometry beats the state by 35 points while English II beats it by 13. Second, chronic absenteeism is almost entirely a high school story at 9.2%, more than four times the middle school's rate. Enrollment also falls sharply as grades rise, from about 133 students per elementary grade to 95 per high school grade, and per-student spending tilts toward the upper grades while elementary classes are the largest. Note that free/reduced lunch is reported only for the high school (68.16%), and spending figures date to 2018–19, so some comparisons are limited.
