Summary

Haviland Middle School is a public middle school located in Hyde Park, New York, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 750 students. The school is part of the Hyde Park Central School District, which is ranked 655 out of 874 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Haviland Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York middle schools, with a statewide ranking between 676-1090 over the past 8 years. Its performance on state assessments is also below the state and district averages, with proficiency rates ranging from 35-45% in ELA and 31-49% in Math. The school struggles to support certain student subgroups, with particularly low rankings for Asian, Multi-racial, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status students. In contrast, the school performs better for Hispanic and English Language Learner students, ranking in the middle 50% of schools.

When compared to nearby middle schools, such as Marlboro Middle School, Bulkeley Middle School, and Orville A. Todd Middle School, Haviland Middle School generally underperforms. These schools have significantly higher academic performance and rankings, despite serving similar student populations. Haviland Middle School's high per-student spending of around $36,000 and low student-teacher ratio of 9-10 students per teacher do not seem to translate into better academic outcomes for the students.

Open Quote Very few options for students who are not struggling. They have time built into the day to help the remedial students. However for any child who is not among that group, they cannot even offer a full days schedule. The tax rate in this town is through the roof but money has not equated to quality education.
