Summary

Cairo-Durham Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 441 students in grades PK-5 in the Cairo-Durham Central School District located in Cairo, New York. The school has seen steady improvements in its statewide ranking, moving from 1726 out of 2201 New York elementary schools in 2020-2021 to 861 out of 2445 in 2024-2025.

While the school's performance on state assessments is mixed compared to the state average, with 4th and 5th-grade students performing better than the state average in ELA and Math, 3rd-grade students lag behind. Despite the high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds at Cairo-Durham Elementary, the school's performance for this subgroup is above average, ranking in the top 50% of New York elementary schools. This may be attributed to the significant increase in per-student spending, from $14,776 in 2020-2021 to $30,229 in 2023-2024, as well as the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 8.6 to 9.6 over the past few years.

Open Quote My niece came to live with me this year in NH. She came from Cairo Elementary School where she was supposedly doing well and reading at grade level. She entered the 4th grade here and we discovered that she was so far behind academically and she is needing a lot of extra help to catch up to the other kids. Tutoring and the school's reading program on a daily basis are helping but she is still below average. Way to go Cairo!! Close Quote
