Summary

East Williamsburg Scholars Academy is a public high school in Brooklyn, New York, serving 492 students in grades 9-12 and part of the New York City Geographic District #14. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of New York high schools over the past several years, with a low 1-2 star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating it is performing below average compared to other high schools in the state.

East Williamsburg Scholars Academy struggles across many metrics, including a 4-year graduation rate around 84% (slightly below the district average), a high dropout rate of 4.5-4.9% (higher than the district), and a very high chronic absenteeism rate ranging from 31.5% to 45.9% (significantly higher than the district). In most Regents/Common Core exams, the school's proficiency rates lag behind the district and state averages, particularly in subjects like Geometry, Earth Science, and Algebra I. However, the school does perform better than the district average in English Language Arts, Global History, and U.S. History.

While East Williamsburg Scholars Academy faces significant challenges, the nearby Brooklyn Latin School stands out as an exceptional performer, consistently ranking among the top 2-13 high schools in New York. This highlights the stark contrast in educational outcomes within the same district. Addressing the school's low performance, high absenteeism, and disparities in student outcomes will require a comprehensive, targeted approach by the school, district, and community stakeholders.

Open Quote The principal, Monica Ortiz, has really mismanaged this school; she was brought in to turn it around after the last principal failed, but has done nothing except balance the school's budget. Teacher morale is still low; teachers leave at an alarming rate and students are upset every Sept. when they find out their teachers are gone. The attendance rate is horrible and the numbers are misrepresented to the DOE. Students regularly threaten teachers yet the administration does nothing. Fights are a weekly occurrance. Students wander the halls looking for trouble instead of going to class and the admin. does nothing. The principal believes that blaming teachers for all the problems will change things, but nothing changes; the situation continues to get worse. Someone, an adult or a student, will get hurt if nothing is done. Close Quote
