Summary

Ps 23 Carter G Woodson is an elementary school in Brooklyn, New York, serving 221 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #14, which is ranked 541 out of 874 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Ps 23 Carter G Woodson has struggled, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math significantly lower than the district and state averages. In the 2024-2025 school year, only 36-50% of students were proficient in ELA, and 38-68% were proficient in Math. The school's performance has been consistently low over the past few years, often with proficiency rates below 50% in both subjects. Interestingly, nearby schools like Brooklyn Charter School and Ps 297 Abraham Stockton generally perform better than Ps 23 Carter G Woodson, suggesting the charter school model may be more effective in this community.

Ps 23 Carter G Woodson serves a high-need population, with over 90% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the district and state averages. Despite the school's high per-student spending, reaching nearly $49,000 per student in the 2023-2024 school year, this has not translated into improved academic outcomes. The school's resource allocation and the factors contributing to its underperformance, particularly for its Hispanic and English Language Learner populations, warrant further investigation and targeted interventions to support student learning.

Open Quote I think the info here is a bit dated because this school is much better than these stats would suggest. As of autumn 2013, it rates a B overall by the Dept of Education, with an A for student environment, and indeed the children are friendly and kind and the staff maintains a disciplined and respectful atmosphere. All of my child's teachers are highly educated and skilled in the classroom. New to the neighborhood, I took a chance with my neighborhood school because of its A environment rating and lucked out - this is a wonderful little school! Close Quote
