Summary

Paula Hedbavny School is a public elementary school serving grades K-8 in New York City's District 6, with 290 students. The school has consistently been rated 2 out of 5 stars by SchoolDigger, indicating it is performing below average compared to other New York elementary schools.

Academically, Paula Hedbavny School's proficiency rates on state assessments are generally below the district and state averages across grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's 3rd grade ELA proficiency rate was 47.06%, compared to 46.79% for the district and 54.15% for the state. The school performs better in certain areas, such as 8th grade ELA and science, but these are the exceptions. Nearby Washington Heights Academy has significantly higher proficiency rates across the board.

The school has seen a significant increase in per-student spending, from $16,492 in 2020-2021 to $39,814 in 2023-2024, and a decrease in student-teacher ratio from 10.9 to 8.2 over the same period. However, this increased funding and staffing has not yet translated into improved academic outcomes. The school's performance remains relatively stagnant, suggesting the need for more effective implementation of instructional strategies and support for its high-needs student population.

Open Quote Wonderful school with excellent arts and music program. I am not sure of the experience of the previous poster but if asked, many parent will tell you that the principal is very responsive and open to change. The school is small and has a wonderful sense of family. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is not responsive to parents, and lacks in several areas. They do not communicate effectively on children's progress in the classroom, or developments in the school. They also do not adequately address behavioral problems and disruptions in the class, leaving physically aggressive and disruptive children in the classroom. The principal is condescending and rude, and is not open to parents concerns or critiques about the school. The school would have potential if they were less short sighted and would address issues that parents raise. I would not recommend this school. We, along with several other families, will not be returning next year. Close Quote
