Roy Gomm Elementary is a K–5 school of 407 students on Mayberry Drive in southwest Reno, part of the Washoe County School District, and it is one of Nevada's highest-performing elementary schools — 19th of 376 in 2025–26, the 95th percentile, with five stars. Proficiency in 2025–26 reached 70% in math and 71% in reading, roughly double the state's 36.2% and 45.2%, and above the district's 37% and 44.4%. Science came in at 39.3%. Chronic absenteeism is 13.8%, about half the district's 27.5% and the state's 25.5%. The school has never fallen below the 89th percentile in the past decade and was the #1 elementary school in Nevada in 2018–19.

Neighboring schools show how much variation exists within a couple of miles. Caughlin Ranch Elementary now holds the neighborhood's top spot (1st statewide, 82.8% math, 86.6% reading), while Grace Warner Elementary ranks 342nd (22.6% math). Caughlin Ranch spends $13,128 per student and Roy Gomm $13,168 — nearly identical — yet their reading results differ by 15.6 points, and Grace Warner spends $2,626 more per student than Roy Gomm while scoring 47 points lower in math. The clearest watch items are internal and specific: 5th-grade science proficiency is 39.3% while the same grade reads at 77%; math is flat to slightly declining across grades (72.7% in 3rd, 68.9% in 4th, 68.8% in 5th), so the math advantage rests on a strong incoming cohort; class size has grown about 25% in two years (17.3 → 18.1 → 21.6 student–teacher ratio); and absenteeism has plateaued near 13.8%.

My son has been at RGE since 2016-17 when we moved down from the North Tahoe area. It was the best move of our lives! Not only is the neighborhood great, but the school is too! The teachers and staff are some of the most attentive and caring I’ve ever witnessed...and I went to a lot of schools growing up. Unlike most, the teachers here seem like they WANT to be here and actually enjoy their work. The parents are very involved as well. We work very hard at fundraising so the kids can have PE classes, musical and art classes and teachers aids where needed. I mean, I saw kid carry out a cello bigger then her! Another added benefit, I think, is the later start then most schools. They start at 9:30 and end at 3:30! I honestly saw an overall difference in my son’s behavior and performance with this change. Like many teachers who were once students here, I have a feeling we will be here a long time. Close Quote
