Summary

Floyd Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Pahrump, Nevada, serving 547 students in grades PK-5. The school has consistently outperformed the Nye County and Nevada state averages in both math and reading proficiency, with 37.8% of students proficient or better in math and 42.7% proficient or better in reading, compared to 22.2% and 34.1% in the county, respectively.

However, Floyd Elementary has faced some challenges, including relatively high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 20.1% to 28.3% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average. The school also serves a high percentage of low socioeconomic status students, with 100% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and has a diverse student population with sizable Hispanic and White student populations.

While Floyd Elementary outperforms the nearby Manse Elementary and J.G. Johnson Elementary Schools on most academic metrics, it lags behind the higher-performing Hafen Elementary School, which is located just 1.66 miles away. This suggests that there may be opportunities for Floyd Elementary to learn from the practices and strategies of its higher-performing neighbor to enhance student outcomes.

Open Quote The personnel at this school need to have more passion and compassion. They don't seem to try hard enough to get the children to love learning. The materials that I have seen used to teach are boring and unimaginative. They seem to focus more on behavior management than creative learning. My child is always telling me how the principle and another teacher is constantly yelling at the children.

The only exception seems to be in the area of computer skills, but then I haven't seen a whole lot of what they do. I can only go by how excited my child is about visiting website addresses that he has learned about at school and getting on the computer at home.

My main complaint is that the teachers are shrouded from interaction with parents. When my first child attended school, I felt welcomed by her teachers and invited to help out in the classroom. My input was valued. At Floyd Elementary I can't get to the classroom to speak to the teacher at all, she rarely calls me back when I leave a message for her and events that are held to be parent, teacher meetings are little more than staged group lessons. We as parents are given the cold shoulder and left to feel like we don't matter, unless they are trying to raise money with some sale or fund drive. I have not had one session where it was the teacher and I one on one, discussing my child's performance and how it can be improved. Close Quote
