Summary

Taos Municipal Charter is a K–8 charter school in Taos, New Mexico, serving 216 students — the largest of the area's charter K–8 schools — and reporting within Taos Municipal Schools. In 2025-26 it ranked 107th of 346 comparable New Mexico elementary schools (69th percentile, 3 stars), a real step back from its own recent record of 5 stars and 90th percentile in 2023-24.

English language arts is a genuine strength: 55.41% of students tested proficient, about 12 points above the state average of 43.34% and above the district. Grades 6–8 are the engine — 6th grade ELA reached 73.08%, 7th grade 64.00%, and 8th grade 59.26%, all well above district and state. Third grade is the soft spot at 33.33%, the only reported ELA grade below both district and state. Among the in-town K–8 charters, Taos Municipal Charter leads in ELA over Taos Integrated School Of Arts (54.03%) and Taos International School (27.88%), though Anansi Charter School, nine miles away, posts higher marks in all three subjects.

The concern is concentrated in math, where proficiency fell from 45% to 31.29% to 24.32% in two years — from roughly 20 points above the state to slightly below it. Science gave back most of its earlier advantage as well. Taos Integrated School Of Arts, nearly the same size and 1.6 miles away, still posts 37.90% math and 45.24% science. Subgroup results are encouraging: low-income students reached the 95th percentile with 5 stars in 2023-24, and boys and girls were both served at a high level with no meaningful gap. Staffing is typical for the area at 12.6 students per teacher. Note that math results for some grade levels were not published because of small class sizes, so those are unknown rather than zero.
