Sunset Elementary is a PK–5 school in Roswell, New Mexico, serving 253 students as part of Roswell Independent Schools, a district rated 48th of 87 statewide (45th percentile, 2 stars). Within that district, Sunset is currently one of the lower-performing schools. In 2025–2026 it ranked 294th of 346 New Mexico schools (15th percentile, 1 star), up from 329th of 345 (5th percentile, 0 stars) the year before. Its best recent year was 2016–2017, when it reached the 52nd percentile (3 stars), but most years since place it in the bottom quartile or bottom fifth statewide.

Sunset's 2025–2026 results show a sharp split between subjects. In English language arts, 25.49% of students in all grades were proficient, compared with 44.72% in the district and 44.66% in the state. Compared with nearby Roswell schools, Sunset's ELA and math proficiency are the lowest among those with reported data: its math score of 9.9% is below every nearby school with reported math, and its ELA of 25.49% trails all but Washington Ave Elementary's 31.63%. Nearby schools serve similar populations — nearly all report 100% free/reduced lunch — yet post much higher results: Nancy Lopez Elementary, Pecos Elementary, Valley View Elementary, Monterrey Elementary, East Grand Plains Elementary, Military Heights Elementary and El Capitan Elementary all show ELA proficiency in roughly the 43–52% range and math between about 20% and 38%. Sidney Gutierrez Middle is a striking local outlier at the 96th percentile (5 stars).
