Mesa Middle

Mesa Middle is a grades 6–8 school at 1601 East Bland St in Roswell, New Mexico, serving 350 students — the smallest of the three Roswell Independent Schools middle schools, in a district that ranks mid-pack statewide. By state rankings, Mesa has landed in the bottom quarter of New Mexico middle schools in every recent year and has not earned more than 1 star since 2014-15. The encouraging news is that 2022-23 marked a low point, and the three years since have settled into a stable range around the 19th–21st percentile — stabilization rather than a turnaround.

Math is the clearest concern. In 2025-26, 35.08% of students were proficient in English language arts but only 13.11% in math, and math gets weaker as students move up: proficiency falls from 21.74% in 6th grade to 13.00% in 7th and just 6.19% in 8th, where only about 1 in 16 students is proficient. Eighth-grade science is also low at 23.01. For comparison, Berrendo Middle — six miles away in the same district — outperforms the state average in both reading and math, while Sierra Middle, Mountain View Middle, and Dexter Middle sit between the two. Notably, Mesa's 6th-grade math is competitive with its peers, so the difficulty is concentrated in the upper grades.

Mesa's standout strength is staffing: 10.8 students per teacher in 2024-25, the lowest of any nearby middle school and a 28% reduction over two years. Reading scores have also risen for three straight years, from 28% to 35.08%, and low-income students improved to roughly the 35th percentile — above the school's overall standing. Support for students with disabilities remains the weakest area, and the spread between the strongest and weakest groups is now more than 20 percentile points. Bottom line: small classes and recent reading gains are real assets, and 8th-grade math and science are the clearest targets for improvement.
