Milan Elementary is a PK–6 school serving 410 students in Milan, New Mexico, just outside Grants, as part of Grants-Cibola County Schools. Nearly every student comes from a low-income household: 98.78% qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–25, the highest rate among the district's four elementaries with reported data. Staffing has improved, with the student–teacher ratio tightening from 15.5 to 13 to 11 over the past three years.

Academically, Milan ranks 220 of 346 New Mexico elementary schools (36th percentile, 2 stars) in 2025–26 — its best showing since 2021–22 and a step up from 299 of 413 (28th percentile, 1 star) in 2023–24. The school outperforms its own district in both subjects: 38.12% in language arts and 18.83% in math, versus 34.03% and 16.37% district-wide. That district, however, ranks just 64 of 87 statewide, and Milan still trails state averages of 43.34% in language arts and 25.54% in math.

Results swing sharply by grade. Fourth grade is a bright spot, at or above state in both subjects (50.91% language arts, 34.55% math), and fifth-grade reading also beats the state. Third-grade reading (20.45%) and sixth-grade math (reported as under 10%) are the weakest points. Among nearby schools, Mount Taylor Elementary is the closest peer in size and demographics, posting similar math results but stronger reading. Bluewater Elementary's high scores come with only 63 students and a 61.9% low-income rate — a very different population — and San Rafael Elementary's math data is suppressed. Within Milan, special education students ranked at the 68th percentile, and low-income students climbed from the 29th to the 55th percentile.
