Summary

Sunrise Elementary is a PK–6 school at 1000 County Line Dr in Anthony, New Mexico, a small community in the state's southern border region, serving 406 students as part of Gadsden Independent Schools, where essentially every student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. In 2025–26 it ranked 278th of 346 New Mexico elementary schools — the 20th percentile, or 1 star — within a district that itself ranks 54th of 87 statewide.

Reading is the school's clearest challenge. Sunrise's English/language arts proficiency of 26.05% is lower than every one of nine nearby same-district campuses compared here, all of which share the same 100% free/reduced-lunch profile. The strongest peer, La Union Elementary (57.43%), more than doubles Sunrise, and Loma Linda Elementary (48.57%) and Gadsden Elementary (44.78%) post roughly double the ELA proficiency with similar or larger classes. Third-grade ELA is the deepest hole at 17.65%, about 23 points below the district. Math is different: 28.57% proficient is above the state average and ahead of Berino Elementary (19.14%) and Vado Elementary (21.54%), with 5th- and 6th-grade math above state averages.

Recent movement is mixed. Math rose from 21.01% to 28.57% in one year, while ELA gained only 23.95% to 26.05%. The student/teacher ratio has improved every year on record, from 16.1 to 12.3 — better than Yucca Heights Elementary (15.1) and Desert Trail Elementary (14.4), both of which outperform Sunrise. Sunrise was a 69th-percentile school in 2014–15 and 48th as recently as 2021–22, so the bottom-quintile standing is recent.
