Summary

Belen Middle is a grades 7–8 school at 314 South 4th St in Belen, New Mexico, serving 475 students as part of Belen Consolidated Schools — the second-largest school in this comparison group, in a community where nearly every student (99.79% in 2024-2025) qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. For 2025-2026 it ranks 142nd of 191 New Mexico middle schools (26th percentile, 1 star), while the district sits in the 40th percentile. Its 15.8:1 student-teacher ratio is mid-pack locally: better than Los Lunas Middle (19.0:1) and Valencia Middle School (21.1:1), but higher than feeder Central Elementary (11.4:1).

Results are low and uneven by subject. English language arts proficiency is 38.53% versus 44.93% district and 44.66% state; math is 17.49% versus 27.52% and 27.85%; and eighth-grade science is 17.89% versus 19.51% district and 34.33% state. The gap to the state therefore widens from reading to math to science. Math is the deepest shortfall — about 10 points below the school's own district and below every nearby school here, including Valencia Middle School (19.69%) and Central Elementary (17.56%); only Los Lunas Middle (30.66%) scores meaningfully above district and state. That gap isn't explained by district quality or staffing: Belen Consolidated Schools outranks Los Lunas Public Schools as a district, yet Los Lunas Middle leads by roughly 11 points in ELA and 13 in math.

Over ten reported years the school has never risen into the upper half of New Mexico schools, and its percentile recently moved from the 36th to the 40th to the 30th and now the 26th, giving back the 2023-2024 gains. Math has stayed essentially flat while the state's baseline improved. The brightest spots are reading — within about 6 points of state, and up 7 points from 2022-2023 to 2024-2025 before a roughly 3-point dip — and results for Native American, Hispanic and low-income students, which have consistently ranked above the school's overall standing; group sizes are small, so year-to-year movement should be read cautiously. Those stronger results suggest the school-wide percentile is not a ceiling.
