Summary

New Mexico Connections Academy is an alternative public school in Santa Fe, NM, serving grades 4–12 with 1,487 students and operating as its own district. It is much larger than nearby alternative options: Nm School For The Deaf has 145 students in PK–12, and Aspen Community School has 285 students in PK–12 and is part of Santa Fe Public Schools.

Graduation is the standout success. The school’s rate rose from 42.6% in 2020–21 to 78.1% in 2024–25, a 35.5-point gain that left it just 2.5 points below the state’s 80.6%. By comparison, Nm School For The Deaf’s last reported school rate was 68.4% in 2022–23, though that is a different year and its 2024–25 school figure was not reported; Aspen Community School has no graduation data. NMCA also has a lower free/reduced lunch rate—47.81% in 2024–25—than Aspen’s 98.6% and Nm School For The Deaf’s 100%, while its student-teacher ratio of 21.6 is much higher than Aspen’s 10.1 and Nm School For The Deaf’s 3.6.

Test results are mixed. ELA is close to the state: 45.81% in 2024–25 versus 44.19%, and 42.92% in 2025–26 versus 44.66%. Math is the clearest weakness, at 15.05% all-grade in 2025–26 versus 27.85% statewide, with SAT School Day math at 2.94% versus 12.55%. Science was 38.48% in 2024–25, above the state’s 35.14%, but fell to 28.17% in 2025–26, below the state’s 33.62%. NMCA outperforms Aspen Community School on every reported all-grade subject—ELA 42.92% vs. 31.87%, math 15.05% vs. 9.43%, science 28.17% vs. 20%—but Aspen serves a much higher-poverty population and some Aspen math results are reported only as under 20%. Values the state suppressed, such as 10th grade ELA, math, and science and 4th grade math, should be treated as unknown, not zero.
