Summary

MacArthur Elementary is a PK–5 school at 1100 MacArthur Rd NW in Albuquerque's North Valley, serving 241 students as part of Albuquerque Public Schools. Its own trajectory tells the story: after ranking as high as the 72nd percentile (4 stars) in 2014–15 and 2017–18, the school now sits at 215th of 346 elementary schools — 38th percentile, 2 stars — the weakest result in a decade of data. The district itself is rated 2 stars and ranks 55th of 87 statewide.

Reading is comparatively healthy; math is the defining problem. In 2025–2026, 37.61% of students were proficient in language arts (vs. 43.55% district, 43.34% state) but only 15.60% in math (vs. 25.74% district). Third-grade reading beats both district and state, but fourth-grade reading falls below both — a fade pattern. Math lags at every grade where data exists, and science results were suppressed by the state this year. Class sizes are small, at 9.5 students per teacher, better than nearly every nearby school — yet that advantage isn't showing up in results.

What stands out most is that poverty doesn't separate MacArthur from higher-performing neighbors. Nearby Alvarado Elementary serves the same 100% low-income population and posts roughly double MacArthur's reading and math proficiency (71.09% ELA, 82nd percentile). Griegos Elementary and Mountain Mahogany Community School are also near-100% low-income and outrank MacArthur. (Montessori Of The Rio Grande scores higher still but serves a very different population, at 21% low-income.) Notably, MacArthur's math proficiency fell from 28.57% — above both district and state — to 15.6% in one year, a school-specific drop. The takeaways: a strong early reading start, a math decline worth asking about, and nearby proof that similar schools get better results.

Open Quote Teachers are great. The principal and certain other administrative staff do not seem qualified for the positions they hold. If they are, why do they continue to avoid the bullying problem that exists at MacArthur involving some students, parents, and unfortunately a few of the staff members. Certain parents have expressed concern and demanded action be taken to protect their children while they are at school, but seem to be continuously ignored or disregarded. I believe there needs to be more urgent concern of this problem and perhaps even an internal investigation. Close Quote
