Chaparral Elementary is a PK–5 neighborhood school serving 523 students at 6325 Milne Rd NW in northwest Albuquerque, part of Albuquerque Public Schools. Its defining story is a decade-long slide in statewide standing: in 2014–15 it ranked 77th of 421 New Mexico elementaries (82nd percentile, 4 stars), and by 2025–26 it had fallen to 273rd of 346 (21st percentile, 1 star). Because the number of ranked schools shrank over that period, percentile is the fair comparison. Proficiency now trails the state in every subject — ELA 35.89% vs. 43.34%, math 16.75% vs. 25.54%, and grade 5 science 25% vs. 32.24%. Math is the deepest hole: only about one in six students is proficient, with no upward movement over three years.

Poverty explains why results sit below state averages — but not why they sit below nearby schools serving the same population. Marie M Hughes Elementary, Griegos Elementary, and Chamiza Elementary, all within about 2.5 miles and also essentially 100% low-income, outperform Chaparral by roughly 12–20 points in ELA and 7–14 points in math.
