Capitan, New Mexico is served by three public schools, all part of Capitan Municipal Schools: Capitan Elementary (PK–5, 207 students), Capitan Middle (6–8, 102 students), and Capitan High (9–12, 134 students), for a total enrollment of 443. The district is ranked 36th of 87 districts statewide, at the 59th percentile with 3 stars. Capitan Elementary is the clear academic standout. It is the only school with 4 stars in all three recent years and currently ranks 69th of 346 schools statewide — the 80th percentile. Its proficiency results are well above both district and state levels: 60.44 in language arts and 43.96 in math, compared with 48 and 31.11 for the district and 43.34 and 25.54 statewide. Fourth grade ELA (75%) and math (54.17%) are notably strong. Its weakest relative spot is 5th grade math, at 34.29% versus the state's 33.85%, essentially at the state level.
Capitan Middle and Capitan High have both slipped since 2023–2024, when each was rated 4 stars. The middle school has moved from the 83rd to the 53rd percentile and now 3 stars, and the high school from the 87th to the 56th percentile with 3 stars. Science is a consistent bright spot at every level, with all three schools exceeding the state. Math, however, becomes more of a concern in the upper grades; the middle school's 8th grade math and the high school's all-grades math are reported as under 20%, below the state's 20.29% and 25.54% respectively, and several math figures are suppressed as under 20%. Capitan High's graduation rate of 90.4% is nearly 10 points above the state's 80.6%.
