Summary:

ZIP code 08225 has two public schools: Northfield Community Elementary School, serving PK–4, and Northfield Community Middle School, serving grades 5–8. In 2025–2026, the middle school was above state results in every tested grade for ELA, math and science. The elementary school was above the state in three of its four reported ELA and math results; grade 4 math was the exception, at 42% versus 47%, or 5 points below. The most important finding is that the middle school’s results were consistently above state levels, while the elementary school’s performance was more mixed.

The middle school stands out most clearly in the latest results: Algebra I End of Course was 86% versus 40% statewide, a 46-point lead, and grade 7 math was 61% versus 38%, a 23-point lead. At the elementary school, grade 3 math was 5 points above the state, and ELA was 4 points above in grade 3 and 5 points above in grade 4. These are comparisons with state results, not direct school-versus-school rankings, since the schools have no tested grades in common. SchoolDigger’s statewide rankings also place the middle school higher: 187th of 743 schools, in the 75th percentile with 4 stars, compared with the elementary school’s 622nd of 1,331, in the 53rd percentile with 3 stars.

Across the same 12 ELA and math grade results, the schools’ average lead over the state narrowed from 10 points in 2024–2025 to 8 points in 2025–2026. The change was concentrated in the elementary results: its average lead fell from 8 points to 2, while the middle school’s remained around 11 points. Individual middle-school grades moved in different directions: grade 8 math rose 24 points, from 18% to 42%, while grade 6 ELA fell 15 points, from 73% to 58%. In 2024–2025, student-teacher ratios were 9.1 at the elementary school and 9.5 at the middle school. Both reported free/reduced lunch eligible measures for that year: 26.3% at the elementary school and 25.9% at the middle school. Those figures provide context, not an explanation for the test results.
