Summary:

Zip code 08052 has four schools serving grades PK–12: Howard Yocum Elementary (PK–1), Maude M. Wilkins Elementary School (grades 2–4), Ralph J. Steinhauer Elementary School (grades 5–6), and Maple Shade High School (grades 7–12). The most important area-wide finding is that proficiency in tested grades remains below state averages, although the gaps narrowed: in 2025–2026, average ELA results were 35% versus 51% statewide, and math results were 23% versus 40%; the gaps shrank from 22 to 16 points in ELA and from 22 to 17 points in math.

Wilkins was closest to the state on its school-level ELA average, at 39% versus 47% (8 points below), and averaged 31% in math versus 48% statewide (17 points below). Steinhauer averaged 41% in ELA versus 51% statewide and 20% in math versus 43%, leaving gaps of 11 and 23 points. Maple Shade High had the largest ELA gap among the school averages—29% versus 54%, or 25 points—but its results varied sharply by course: grade 8 Algebra I reached 90% versus 75% statewide, and grade 9 Geometry reached 61% versus 50%. Those strengths contrast with grade 8 ELA at 25% versus 53%. Because the schools serve different grade bands, these test-specific strengths do not establish one overall best school; Yocum has no supplied test scores.

Recent progress is strongest at Wilkins: its grade 3 ELA rose from 27% to 47%, and its average ELA and math results across grades 3–4 each improved by about 10 points. Steinhauer’s grade 5 science result rose from 11% to 15% while the state result fell from 30% to 27%. At Maple Shade High, graduation was 92% versus 89% statewide, but chronic absenteeism was 22% versus 14%. All four schools report free/reduced lunch eligible figures for 2024–2025, ranging from 53% to 57%; student–teacher ratios among the schools with scores are close, at 10.7:1 to 11.1:1. SchoolDigger lists the same district ranking for all four—517 of 607, in the 15th percentile, with one star—while its school percentile history rose from 12th to 30th for Wilkins and fell from 35th to 28th for Maple Shade High.
