Summary:

Schools in zip code 07417 include five schools—three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school—serving students from elementary grades through high school. In 2025–2026, elementary-school averages were above state results by 24 points in math, 20 points in ELA and 10 points in grade 5 science; Franklin Avenue Middle School also exceeded state results in most reported grades, while Ramapo High School’s results varied by exam. The clearest overall finding is that strong area averages hide substantial differences between schools and subjects.

High Mountain Road School stands out among the elementary schools, with grade 3–5 averages of 83% in math and 78% in ELA, and it led in every comparable subject-grade result except grade 4 ELA. That exception belongs to Woodside Avenue School, which scored 80%—34 points above the state. Colonial Road School is the main concern: its averages were 55% in ELA, 64% in math and 26% in grade 5 science, and its grade 5 ELA and science scores were 2 and 1 point below state results. At the secondary level, Franklin Avenue Middle School had 100% proficiency in grade 7 Algebra I and grade 8 Geometry, but just 18% in grade 8 general math. Ramapo High School scored 87% on NJGPA math, while its Algebra I end-of-course result was 33%.

Elementary results generally declined from 2024–2025: group averages fell 8 points in ELA, 8 in math and 8 in grade 5 science. High Mountain was an exception in math and science, rising 1 and 11 points; Woodside and Colonial had broader declines. Franklin Avenue’s grade 6–8 ELA average fell 11 points, while its grade 8 science and advanced-math results improved or remained high. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile ranking rose for High Mountain, from 89th in 2024–2025 to 95th in 2025–2026, while Colonial fell from 85th to 64th. As context, 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible shares were 3% at High Mountain, 2% at Woodside and 3% at Colonial; student-teacher ratios ranged from 6.9 at Colonial to 9.9 at Woodside. These figures describe differences but do not explain them.
