Summary

Ryerson Elementary School serves 250 students in grades K–5 in Wayne, New Jersey, as part of the Wayne Township Public School District. Its latest results are mixed against state averages, but are consistently low compared with nearby schools serving the same grades. The central concern for families comparing local schools is Ryerson’s sizable gap with nearby K–5 peers.

In 2025–26, Ryerson’s average results across tested grades trailed nearby K–5 schools by about 19–21 percentage points in ELA, math, and science. Science is a particular weakness: 5th graders scored 26% proficient, compared with a 47% nearby-school average and 48% district average; the state result was 27%. In 4th-grade ELA, Ryerson scored 31%, versus 59% at nearby schools and 58% districtwide. There are some bright spots against the state: Ryerson was above state averages in 3rd-grade ELA, 5th-grade ELA, and 3rd-grade math. Overall, though, it was below the state in 4th-grade ELA, 4th- and 5th-grade math, and 5th-grade science.

Results have improved over the longer term, especially in math: its average rose from 28% in 2022–23 to 44% in 2025–26, a 16-point gain. ELA and science also gained over that period, though both averages slipped from 2024–25. SchoolDigger ranks Ryerson at the 47th percentile with 2 stars; nearby schools with rankings are at the 59th–93rd percentiles and have 3–5 stars. In 2024–25, Ryerson had the lowest student-teacher ratio among nearby schools, at 9.1:1, and the highest reported share of students free/reduced lunch eligible: 30%, compared with nearby rates of 4%–25%. These are context, not explanations for test results. SchoolDigger’s statewide rankings show stronger relative results for Low Socio Economic Status Students, at the 76th percentile, and Hispanic Students, at the 72nd percentile, compared with Ryerson’s overall 47th percentile. Chronic absenteeism also improved, falling from 26% in 2020–21 to 10% in 2024–25; that latest rate was below the state’s 14% but above the district’s 9%.
