Summary:
The four elementary schools in the Mahwah Township Public School District serve 1,227 students across PK–5: Lenape Meadows serves PK–3, Betsy Ross Elementary and George Washington School serve K–3, and Joyce Kilmer School serves grades 4–5. The clearest school-to-school comparison is among the three schools with third graders. All three were above state results in 2025–26, but their scores differed substantially.
George Washington led the comparable third-grade results, with 84% proficient in ELA and 93% in math—36 and 44 points above state results. Lenape Meadows was lowest, at 65% in ELA and 69% in math, but still exceeded the state by 17 and 20 points. Betsy Ross fell between them, at 75% in ELA and 77% in math. At Joyce Kilmer, each reported grade-and-subject result was above the state for that grade; its largest margin was 21 points in fourth-grade ELA. Those results were generally close to district results, however: Joyce was 0.3 points ahead in fourth-grade ELA and math and matched the district in fifth-grade ELA, math, and science.
Recent trends differ by school. From 2024–25 to 2025–26, George Washington rose 8 points in third-grade ELA and 9 in math, while Betsy Ross fell 16 points in ELA and 7 in math after its earlier high ELA score of 91%. Lenape dipped by 1 point in ELA and 8 in math. The three-school average remained above the state, but narrowed from 33 to 27 points in ELA and from 32 to 30 in math. SchoolDigger’s percentile rank rose from 93rd to 99th for George Washington between 2023–24 and 2025–26; Betsy Ross went from 95th to 91st after reaching 99th, while Lenape moved from 71st to 79th after reaching 86th. In 2024–25, free/reduced lunch eligible measures were 4% at George Washington, 5% at Betsy Ross, and 18% at Lenape; student-teacher ratios were 9.3, 10.1, and 11.9, respectively.
