Summary:

Freehold Township School District has seven schools—five elementary and two middle schools—serving grades PK/K–8. In 2025–2026, achievement varied by school and subject, but the clearest overall finding is that every school’s average ELA and math proficiency was above the state average for the same grades.

Marshall W. Errickson School led elementary schools in both grades 3–5 ELA, at 67%, and math, at 70%; C. Richard Applegate School had the lowest elementary ELA average, at 53%, while Laura Donovan School had the lowest math average, at 60%. Even so, elementary averages across schools ranged from 53% to 67% in ELA and 60% to 70% in math, compared with state averages of 49% and 47%. Among middle schools, Clifton T. Barkalow School led Dwight D. Eisenhower School in ELA, 69% to 67%, and math, 54% to 50%. Grade-5 science results showed a sharper contrast: Joseph J Catena School had the highest result, 51%, while Applegate had the lowest, 18%; the state was at 27%.

Results shifted in different directions from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026: elementary averages fell about 1 point in ELA and rose about 2 points in math, while middle-school averages fell about 2 points in ELA and rose about 2 points in math. SchoolDigger’s rankings also varied: Barkalow and Errickson reached the 84th and 79th percentiles, respectively; Donovan and Applegate had three stars, while the other listed schools had four. As context, the schools’ free/reduced lunch eligible measures were reported for 2024–2025 and ranged from 14% at Errickson to 22% at Donovan. Student-teacher ratios ranged from 8.2 at Barkalow to 12.2 at Errickson, so these figures offer useful comparisons but do not explain achievement differences.
