Somersworth Middle School in Somersworth, New Hampshire, serves approximately 286 students in grades 6–8 in a relatively small, high-need community within the Somersworth School District. The school has a 9.6 student-teacher ratio, which is favorable compared with most nearby schools, but its academic results remain among the lowest in the state. For 2025–2026, it ranked 114th of 138 New Hampshire middle schools, placing it in the 17th percentile, and received a one-star rating. The district ranked in the bottom 10% statewide.

Reading is the school’s relative strength, with 45% proficiency overall. Sixth-grade reading was weaker at 32%, but results improved to 52% in seventh grade and 49% in eighth grade, bringing the eighth-grade result close to the state average. Science proficiency was 27%, below the state’s 38%, but it has improved substantially from 13% in 2022–2023. These results suggest some progress, especially in science and upper-grade reading, but not yet a broad schoolwide turnaround.

Somersworth generally trails nearby schools, although local comparisons vary. The school performed similarly to Rochester Middle School and Nute Junior High School, but ranked well below Dover Middle School, Barrington Middle School, and especially Oyster River Middle School. Its 38.46% free/reduced-lunch enrollment is higher than at many higher-performing comparison schools, though it is similar to or lower than some schools with greater economic need. Important improvement priorities include mathematics instruction, sixth-grade transition support, special education services, and making better use of the school’s relatively favorable staffing ratio.

Open Quote Students here are held to very high standards in behavior. The staff and teachers at SMS also work hard to teach within a framework of sustainability practices including composting, maple sugaring on the property, school gardens, and building projects utilizing math skills. Administration here encourages outdoor learning opportunities often, and curriculum presented through the lens of real life skill. Close Quote
