Summary

Somersworth Middle School is a public middle school serving grades 6-8 in Somersworth, New Hampshire, with 309 students. The school is part of the Somersworth School District, which is ranked 143 out of 158 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Somersworth Middle School has consistently underperformed the state average in academic proficiency, ranking in the bottom quarter of New Hampshire middle schools over the past 10 years. In the 2024-2025 school year, the school had only 23% proficiency in Math compared to the state average of 42%, and 47% proficiency in Reading compared to the state's 55%. The school also struggles to support its student subgroups, particularly Special Education students, ranking in the bottom 10% of middle schools in the state for this population. However, the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10 to 11.2 students per teacher over the past 3 years, which is on par with or better than nearby schools.

Somersworth Middle School is located in close proximity to several higher-performing middle schools, such as Oyster River Middle School, Rye Junior High School, and Portsmouth Middle School. This suggests that the challenges faced by Somersworth Middle School may be unique to the school and district, and the high free/reduced lunch rates at the school may indicate potential staffing and resource challenges that could be contributing to its academic struggles.

Open Quote Students here are held to very high standards in behavior. The staff and teachers at SMS also work hard to teach within a framework of sustainability practices including composting, maple sugaring on the property, school gardens, and building projects utilizing math skills. Administration here encourages outdoor learning opportunities often, and curriculum presented through the lens of real life skill. Close Quote
