White Mountains Regional School District serves the White Mountains area through three schools: one high school for Grades 9–12 and two elementary schools serving Pre-K through Grade 8. The district enrolls about 885 students, with roughly two-thirds attending Lancaster Elementary or Whitefield Elementary. The schools are relatively similar in size, and reported student-teacher ratios are low, ranging from 7.8 to 8.7 students per teacher.
White Mountains Regional High School is the district’s strongest recent success story. Its ranking improved substantially in 2025–2026, and proficiency increased in mathematics, reading, and science. However, families should also consider the school’s 80.3% graduation rate and 8.2% dropout rate, which are weaker than state results. Lancaster’s strongest results are generally in the upper grades, especially Grade 7 mathematics and reading.
Whitefield has some notable individual results, including 56% proficiency in Grade 3 mathematics and 54% in Grade 5 reading, but its overall performance is lower than Lancaster’s. Its most urgent concern is science, which declined from 39% to 22% in one year. Elementary mathematics is also uneven, with Whitefield performing well in Grade 3 but considerably lower than Lancaster from Grades 4 through 8. Across the district, reading is the strongest subject, while mathematics and science generally trail state results. Parents may want to look closely at grade-level results, graduation pathways, attendance, and the supports available for students who need additional help.
