Cane River Middle

Cane River Middle is a small, rural school in Burnsville, NC, serving 210 students in grades 6-8 as part of Yancey County Schools. The school’s clearest strengths are in math and science, especially by 8th grade: 74.2% of 8th graders scored proficient in math (well above the state’s 53%) and 77.4% were proficient in science, also comfortably above the state average. Meanwhile, gifted students rank in the 98th percentile statewide, and results for economically disadvantaged students have been strong in recent years. Nearly all of Cane River’s students (98.1%) are currently eligible for free or reduced lunch — a figure that jumped sharply in the past year and likely reflects a change in meal eligibility policy rather than a sudden economic shift. Regionally, Cane River posts stronger results than Mitchell Middle School in nearly every subject and grade, while trailing North Buncombe Middle in reading and earlier-grade math. Overall, it is a moderately high-performing rural middle school whose best work is happening in 8th-grade math and science.
