Summary

Northwest Elementary is a PK–5 school in Pikeville, North Carolina, serving about 559 students as part of Wayne County Public Schools, and is one of the stronger elementary schools in its area of the district. The school currently ranks at the 66th percentile statewide (511 out of nearly 1,500 North Carolina elementary schools), earning a 3-star rating. That is a modest step back from the previous year's 72nd-percentile, 4-star performance, but it remains a clear improvement over the school's results from a decade ago.

Math is the school's clearest strength. Northwest outperforms both the district and the state in 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-grade math, with 4th-grade proficiency near 79% compared with roughly 61% statewide. Reading is more uneven, running slightly ahead of the state in 4th grade but a few points behind in 5th, while 5th-grade science lands just under the state average. Attendance is a major success story: chronic absenteeism has fallen from 38% three years ago to roughly 23% today, below both the county rate of 32% and the statewide rate of 24%. The school also earns high marks for supporting English learners and military-connected students, though special education and gifted-student results dropped sharply in the latest year and deserve attention.

Next to nearby schools, Northwest sits comfortably above Tommy's Road Elementary and Northeast Elementary, though it trails Rosewood Elementary slightly in overall rank, 5th-grade reading, and science. Fremont Elementary, a close demographic neighbor, produces very similar test scores, with Northwest stronger in 4th-grade math and reading. The most striking comparison is Lucama Elementary in Wilson County Schools, which serves an equally high-poverty population yet achieves 94th-percentile, 5-star results, including far higher reading proficiency at every grade. For Pikeville families, Northwest Elementary remains a solid and improving choice — a school with real strengths in math, attendance, and early grades, and clear opportunities to grow in literacy and science.
