Summary

Fairgrove Elementary School is a small, rural public elementary school in Fairmont, North Carolina, serving roughly 291 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade as part of the Public Schools of Robeson County district. Nearly all of its students come from low-income families — a pattern shared by surrounding schools. Fairgrove spent several years near the bottom of North Carolina's elementary school rankings, sitting in the bottom 1st to 12th percentile between 2020-21 and 2024-25. But in 2025-26, the school jumped to the 27th percentile statewide, a climb of roughly 250 places in a single year.

The gains are most visible in the upper grades. Fairgrove's 5th graders posted 62.8% proficiency in math and 71.4% in science in 2025-26 — the science result is above the state average and far ahead of Deep Branch Elementary (30.2%) and Southside Ashpole Elementary (55.6%). The school also outranks Rosenwald Elementary, only about three miles away, despite having a higher chronic absenteeism rate. A lower student-teacher ratio than nearby schools like Pembroke Elementary and Union Elementary may also be helping.

Serious challenges remain. Reading is the biggest concern: only 30.6% of 3rd graders read proficiently in 2025-26, far below the district rate of 45% and the state rate of 55.6%. Chronic absenteeism affects 43.6% of students — nearly double the North Carolina average — although the fact that Fairgrove still improved suggests progress is possible. The example of Old Main STREAM Academy, a similarly high-poverty school about 13 miles away, shows what strong attendance and instruction can achieve: its 3rd-grade reading proficiency is 68.1% within the higher-performing Old Main Stream district. For Fairgrove, the next step is to bring early reading up to the level of its improving math and science instruction. Sustaining this momentum will determine whether the recent gains become a lasting turnaround.
