Between 2015 and 2019, Sedgefield ranked in the bottom 5–12% of North Carolina middle schools; by 2022–2023 it had climbed to a 3-star rating and has held that level since. Reading is a particular strength: in 2025–2026, Sedgefield's 6th, 7th, and 8th grade reading proficiency rates all exceeded district and state averages.
