Summary

Albemarle Road Elementary is a public elementary school in Charlotte, North Carolina, serving 719 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, which is ranked 119 out of 242 districts in the state.

Albemarle Road Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of North Carolina elementary schools over the past several years, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating it is among the lowest-performing schools in the state. The school's academic performance is significantly below the state and district averages in math, reading, and science proficiency across all grade levels. For example, the school's 3rd-grade math proficiency rate is 62.3%, compared to 66.7% for the district and 64.1% for the state, while its 3rd-grade reading proficiency rate is just 34%, compared to 46.5% for the district and 46.7% for the state.

Interestingly, the nearby Piney Grove Elementary and Windsor Park Elementary, which are also part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, generally outperform Albemarle Road Elementary in academic measures, despite serving similar high-poverty populations. This suggests that the challenges faced by Albemarle Road Elementary may be unique or more severe than those faced by other schools in the district, and the school may require targeted interventions and additional support to address the root causes of its academic struggles.

Open Quote Albemarle Road Elementary is not a place where any child should attend school. The majority of children are children of color from impoverished families. These children, with high levels of trauma, are being institutionalized as the school mimics a prison.
Teachers screaming at children to remain perfectly silent in perfectly straight lines. The school Social Worker and EC Director are both white and with the school being majority children of color, you can see why the performance is so low. How can people who don’t understand marginalized populations actually service these children in an impactful way? Close Quote
