Summary

Battleground Elementary is a PK–5 public school in Lincolnton, NC, serving 420 students in Lincoln County Schools. The story here is a remarkable turnaround: in 2022–23 the school ranked near the bottom of North Carolina elementary schools, and by 2025–26 it had climbed to the 75th percentile statewide with a 4-star rating. Test scores tell the same story. Math is clearly the school’s signature strength. In 2025–26, 3rd-grade math proficiency reached 88.2% and 5th-grade math reached 87.1%, both far above district and state averages and among the highest of any nearby school.

Reading results are more uneven. Third-grade reading is excellent at 70.6% proficiency, well above state and district averages. But 5th-grade reading trails at 48.4%, below both Lincoln County Schools (57.6%) and the state (55.3%). When compared with nearby schools, Battleground posted the strongest 3rd- and 5th-grade math scores in the area, outperforming strong peers like Union Elementary and Maiden Elementary. However, its 5th-grade reading lags behind Union, Iron Station Elementary, Pumpkin Center Intermediate, and Maiden. Notably, higher spending does not explain the differences: Love Memorial Elementary spends more per student yet ranks far below Battleground.

What makes this success especially meaningful is the student population. Nearly all of Battleground’s students come from low-income families, yet students in historically underserved groups — including low-income students, English learners, special education students, and gifted students — rank in the upper quartile statewide compared with their peers. Attendance has also improved dramatically, with chronic absenteeism falling from 28.8% in 2022–23 to 19.1% in 2024–25, though it remains slightly above the district average of 17.2%. The clear next target is closing the upper-grade reading gap.
