Northview Academy

Northview Academy is a small alternative school in Statesville, NC, serving 108 students in grades K–12 under the Iredell-Statesville Schools district, where nearly every student (97%) comes from a low-income household. The school is designed for students who have struggled in mainstream classrooms, and it invests heavily in them — the student-teacher ratio is about 5.6 to 1. There is one encouraging signal: Northview's graduation rate, though roughly 25–30 points behind the district, still means about three in five students graduate — 62.7% in 2025-26 versus 91.6% for the district. That suggests the school provides a genuine alternative pathway for students who might otherwise drop out. Northview also spends heavily: in 2018-19, the most recent reported year, it was about $21,250 per student — and its 5.6:1 staffing ratio means many adults are available for small-group work. For parents, the takeaway is clear: this is an exceptionally challenged population, and attendance is the most important lever. If a child attends regularly, the intensive staffing could make a real difference; if not, no amount of resources will overcome that.
