Summary

Longview Elementary is a small, standalone school in southwest Hickory serving 269 students in grades 3 through 5 as part of Hickory City Schools. The school currently sits in the 18th percentile statewide with a 1-star rating — a steep decline from its solid mid-tier performance in 2017–2019 — and nearly every student (about 99%) qualifies for free or reduced lunch, making it one of the highest-poverty schools in the area.

The academic picture is more complex than the overall rating suggests. Third graders have posted genuinely strong math scores for several years, hovering around 70% proficient, and the school's English Language Learners perform near the state average — a meaningful bright spot. However, those same cohorts fall off sharply as they move into 4th and 5th grade. For example, one recent group scored 72% proficient in 3rd-grade math but only about 41% as 4th graders the next year. By 5th grade, both reading and math proficiency land well below district and state averages. Nearby schools like Mountain View Elementary (79th percentile), Icard Elementary (81st percentile), and Clyde Campbell Elementary (76th percentile) serve similarly high-poverty families but achieve far stronger results.

Resources are not the obvious culprit — Longview spends roughly $10,424 per student and has a favorable 14.8:1 student-teacher ratio. The clearest actionable concern is attendance: chronic absenteeism jumped from 23.9% to 29.3% in one year, roughly double the rate at nearby Oakwood Elementary (17%) and nearly triple Mountain View's rate (10.3%). For a school of 269 students, that represents about 75–80 children missing significant school time. Families should know that early-grade instruction and ELL support are genuine strengths, but chronic absenteeism and a consistent upper-grade slump are the challenges Longview most urgently needs to address.
