Summary

River Bend Middle is a public middle school located in Claremont, North Carolina, serving grades 7-8 with a student population of 442. It is part of the Catawba County Schools district, which is ranked 82 out of 242 districts in the state.

Academically, River Bend Middle's performance is generally below the Catawba County and North Carolina state averages in subjects like math, reading, and science. For example, the school's 7th-grade math proficiency rate was 57% in 2024-2025, compared to 54.7% for the district and 53.5% for the state. However, the school's performance is relatively stronger within its own district, outperforming other middle schools like Maiden Middle School and Harry M Arndt Middle.

One notable concern is the significant disparities in performance across different student subgroups at River Bend Middle. The school ranks particularly low for Asian and African American students, while performing better for Hispanic and English Language Learner (ELL) students. This suggests the need for targeted interventions and support to address these achievement gaps. Additionally, the school's statewide ranking has declined in recent years, from 365 out of 786 North Carolina middle schools in 2021-2022 to 448 out of 773 in 2024-2025, indicating that it is losing ground relative to other middle schools in the state.

Open Quote As a teacher at River Bend Middle, I urge you to look beyond the test scores. What they don't show you is the incredible amount of growth we achieve with our students. River Bend is a safe, welcoming environment with a lot of diversity. The staff is much more than just teachers in a school building. They genuinely care about the well-being of their students, both intellectually and physically. River Bend is a family. After our students move on to high school, many come back to tell us that their time at River Bend was the best 2 years of their education. Close Quote
