Summary

Neuse Charter School in Smithfield, NC, is a K-12 charter school with about 925 students, and it forms its own independent district — separate from Johnston County Public Schools. Although the state assigns it an “Alternative” label, its enrollment and academics look much more like a comprehensive public charter school than an at-risk program. It is larger than nearby Choice Plus Academy and JCPS Virtual Academy but smaller than American Leadership Academy - Johnston, making it a mid-sized charter option in the area.

Academically, the standout story is in the upper grades. The school’s high school End-of-Course exam results are among the best in the area: 91.1 percent of students scored proficient on Math III versus 68.9 percent statewide, and English II proficiency was 80.4 percent, compared with the 64.6 percent state rate. Eighth-grade results are exceptional as well, with reading proficiency at 86.1 percent (state: 56.1) and science at 93.7 percent (state: 68.6). The graduation rate is 93 percent, well above the state’s 86.9 percent, and chronic absenteeism is just 15.7 percent — far below the state’s 24.2 percent and the 27.0 percent at American Leadership Academy - Johnston.

The clearest weakness sits in early elementary math. Third-grade math proficiency is just 46.7 percent, about 20 points below the state average and 34 points behind American Leadership Academy - Johnston. Reading in third grade also trails the state before improving, and math scores remain below state averages through 6th grade. From 7th grade on, however, the school pulls above the state in both reading and math, and its 8th-grade outcomes are far above average. Students here tend to gain momentum the longer they stay, arriving at high school with some of the strongest exam scores in the region. For parents, that creates a trade-off: decide whether early math struggles outweigh an otherwise strong attendance culture, standout middle school results, and excellent high school outcomes.

Neuse Charter School has much smaller classes. The classes are well organized and meet the needs of the students the school rather than the district as a whole. It is focuses on multicultural and technology based curricula. I this extremely clean and well cared for by teacher, students, staff, and parent volunteers. Parents volunteers are vital and a requirement of the school. The fact that is a K-12 school is also very convenient families and aids in the development of the students. Close Quote

Neuse Charter School is now a K-12th grade school of excellence. Our address is 909 E. Booker Dairy Road Smithfield NC 27577. I have had all three of my children attend this school since the day it opened it's doors back in 2007. I have never regretted the decision to have them attend this fabulous public charter school. With low class sizes, high expectations and huge parent involvement they are lucky to be here. We are lucky not to have to deal with many of the problems of other schools. No drugs, not gangs, no sagging pants and disrespect. It is a privilege to attend this school! Close Quote
