Summary

Union Academy is a K–12 public charter school in Monroe, North Carolina, serving about 2,186 students from kindergarten through 12th grade. It is by far the largest school among nearby charter alternatives, enrolling roughly twice as many students as Queen's Grant Community School or Union Prep Academy at Indian Trail, and more than three times as many as Telra Institute or Union Day School. It is also one of the few schools in the area covering the entire K–12 span, meaning its results include elementary, middle, and high school work as well as graduation rates.

Academically, the school consistently exceeds North Carolina state averages. In 2025–2026, 7th grade math proficiency was 82.6% versus 56.2% statewide, 8th grade math reached 80.2% versus 53.0%, and 8th grade science came in at 89.0% compared with 68.6% statewide. At the high school level, it posts the strongest End-of-Course results among nearby charters, averaging about 80% proficiency across Biology, English II, Math I, and Math III—ahead of Socrates Academy at roughly 77% and Union Day School at roughly 71%. Its Math I proficiency of 69.1% is especially notable, sitting 27 points above the state average.

The school also keeps students engaged and on track. Its chronic absenteeism rate of 14.6% in 2024–2025 is far below the state's 24.2% and better than Union Day School's 20.4%, though higher than Telra Institute's unusually low 5.8%. The most recent graduation rate was 93.5% in 2022–2023, well above the state's 86.5%. The school's relative weak point is 5th grade, where reading proficiency ran only slightly above the state average and science proficiency dipped just below it. While smaller nearby schools like Telra Institute and Socrates Academy post even higher raw test scores, Union Academy's ability to produce consistently above-state results while serving a student body more than double their size makes it a strong, comprehensive option for families.

The family atmosphere is a tribute to the requirement of parental volunteering. People who tend to complain about the "clique" environment are usually the ones who do not get involved to level that is expected of all parents of UA. Please note that the negative reviewer did not mention anything about the superior academics, nor the wonderful degree of attention the teachers pay to the students in an effort to tailor their approach to each individual. These teachers do not teach to test, they do so to educate.

If you can win a spot for your child through the lottery, then take full advantage of the opportunity to be a part of something special. No regular public school program will ever be able to offer that which UA does. I'm a fan, and so is my son.

I couldn't disagree more with the previous reviewer. I am not wealthy and my children don't play sports, but my family is always welcomed, thanked and included any time we walk on either campus. The uniform and character policy are great. All the teachers my children have had were excellent and open to hearing my concerns. The family atmosphere is genuine, mainly because each family is asked to contribute 60 hours of volunteer time per school year. There is no better way to have a school of active, involved parents than to have such a volunteer policy. The year round school year is excellent, test scores are well above state averages, and the lottery admission process eliminates entry based on race or income. I could go on and on about how much my children, wife and I all LOVE this school! Close Quote

This is a clique school. Great teachers get shunned. Lazy students, so long as they have rich parents or can play a sport, are encouraged to continue to be lazy. If you are not an "in crowd" person; whether it be parent, student, or staff member, stay away. While the outside looks great, the "family" atmosphere can turn around and stab you in the back.
