Summary

Union Academy is a public charter school located in Monroe, North Carolina that serves grades K-12, with 2,193 students. The school has a history of strong academic performance, as evidenced by its consistently high graduation rates, ranging from 86.4% to 93.5% over the past few years.

Union Academy consistently outperforms the state average on standardized tests across various grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school had significantly higher proficiency rates than the state in mathematics (ranging from 66.1% to 77.6% across grades 3-8) and reading (ranging from 52.9% to 69.4% across grades 3-8). The school's performance on end-of-course (EOC) exams is also impressive, with proficiency rates exceeding the state average by a wide margin in subjects like Biology (75.4% vs. 48.3%), English II (85.6% vs. 59.6%), and Math III (96.2% vs. 66.4%). Additionally, Union Academy maintains a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 16.4 to 17.1 over the past few years, which is significantly lower than the nearby Queen's Grant Community School (33.2) and Union Prep Academy at Indian Trail (19.7).

While Union Academy outperforms the nearby charter schools in most academic metrics, it is worth noting that these schools also demonstrate strong performance, particularly in areas like science and end-of-course exams. The differences in student-teacher ratios and free/reduced lunch rates among the schools may provide insights into the factors that influence academic outcomes. Overall, Union Academy stands out as a high-performing public charter school that consistently delivers strong academic results, graduation rates, and a supportive learning environment for its students.

Open Quote The family atmosphere is a tribute to the requirement of parental volunteering. People who tend to complain about the "clique" environment are usually the ones who do not get involved to level that is expected of all parents of UA. Please note that the negative reviewer did not mention anything about the superior academics, nor the wonderful degree of attention the teachers pay to the students in an effort to tailor their approach to each individual. These teachers do not teach to test, they do so to educate.

If you can win a spot for your child through the lottery, then take full advantage of the opportunity to be a part of something special. No regular public school program will ever be able to offer that which UA does. I'm a fan, and so is my son.

Open Quote I couldn't disagree more with the previous reviewer. I am not wealthy and my children don't play sports, but my family is always welcomed, thanked and included any time we walk on either campus. The uniform and character policy are great. All the teachers my children have had were excellent and open to hearing my concerns. The family atmosphere is genuine, mainly because each family is asked to contribute 60 hours of volunteer time per school year. There is no better way to have a school of active, involved parents than to have such a volunteer policy. The year round school year is excellent, test scores are well above state averages, and the lottery admission process eliminates entry based on race or income. I could go on and on about how much my children, wife and I all LOVE this school! Close Quote

Open Quote This is a clique school. Great teachers get shunned. Lazy students, so long as they have rich parents or can play a sport, are encouraged to continue to be lazy. If you are not an "in crowd" person; whether it be parent, student, or staff member, stay away. While the outside looks great, the "family" atmosphere can turn around and stab you in the back.
