Summary

Millennium Charter Academy, a K-12 charter school in Mount Airy, NC, serves 628 students and is the only school in its own district, also named Millennium Charter Academy. The school’s clearest academic strength is English and reading: 73.9% of students scored proficient on the English II end-of-course test in the latest testing year, above the state average of 64.6% and above nearby Surry Online Magnet School. Seventh-grade reading was also a standout at 66.7% proficient, more than ten points above the state.

Mathematics is the bigger concern. Students start near state averages in early elementary school, but proficiency falls sharply as they progress: only 28.6% of 8th graders were proficient in math, versus 53.0% statewide. The most striking red flag is Math I, the Algebra I gateway test, where just 12.1% of students were proficient—roughly 30 points below the state and below Surry Online Magnet School’s 16.7%. Yet advanced math tells a different story: Math III proficiency reached 73.0%, above the state’s 68.9%. Science has weakened too, with 8th-grade science falling below the state average and Biology end-of-course results trailing by about 20 points.

Graduation rates have hovered near the state average, climbing to 91.2% in 2022-23 but dropping to 82.6% most recently, below the state’s 88.8%. Chronic absenteeism improved from 29.5% to 23.3%, now slightly better than the state’s 24.2%. Compared with the only nearby listed school—small online Surry Online Magnet School, which has 121 students—Millennium is a much larger, traditional campus. Overall, this is a school with genuine strengths in literacy and advanced high school math, but the steady decline in middle-grades math, the very low Math I results, and the recent science drop are the issues parents will want to watch closely—and ask about.

I would highly recommend any child to attend this great school. The teachers as well as the staff go above and beyond for each child. Education, character, scholarship and community help with building such a strong foundation for Millennium Charter Academy. I have two children here, one in the 6th and one in the 9th. Our daughter in the 6th grade has down syndrome and this school has well surpassed our expectations in every area. They have helped her accomplish education goals at every corner and keep her reaching her highest potential in all academics. Our son the 9th is excelling being prepared for college in years to come. They offer a variety of courses of such diversity that gives our children multiple opportunities to choose from. Again I would recommend any child to this school. Close Quote

This is the second year that my children have attended MCA. After leaving the county school system this was a bit of a shock! However, with one in 7th and the other in 4th I could not ask for a better start to their education. I feel like all of the values that I teach them are not being undone the minute they cross the threshold. If you are interested in AP level courses for your children starting at a young age then this is a great school for you. The accelerated curriculum is just what we were hoping for to keep our girls interested and challenged. Close Quote
