High Schools in Newton Conover City Schools

Newton Conover City Schools in North Carolina serves students in grades 9 through 12 at two high schools: Newton-Conover High and Discovery High School. They enroll about 870 students total, with Newton-Conover High the larger campus at 724 students (about 83 percent of district high school enrollment), and Discovery High School serving 146 students. The district carries a 4-star rating and ranks 72nd out of 246 North Carolina districts, yet its two high schools tell different stories.

Discovery High School is the standout, ranking in the 73rd to 81st percentile of North Carolina high schools over the past three years and earning 4 stars each year. Meanwhile, Newton-Conover High has fallen to the bottom third of the state, dropping from the 47th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 27th in 2024-2025 and 30th in 2025-2026. The gap is enormous: over four EOC subjects in 2025-2026, Discovery High School averaged 77 percent proficiency versus 50 percent at Newton-Conover High, with gaps reaching 36 percentage points in English II and Math I. Discovery High School also has lower chronic absenteeism (16.1 percent versus 31.9 percent) and a smaller share of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (29.5 percent versus 60.5 percent). Newton-Conover High reports a strong 93.2 percent graduation rate, above the state average.

Interestingly, Newton-Conover High actually has a more favorable student-teacher ratio (16.5 to 1 versus 22.1 to 1 at Discovery High School) and spends about $2,200 more per student, yet its proficiency results are far lower. Resources alone clearly do not guarantee outcomes. Math I is a notable bright spot: both schools exceed the state average in that subject, while Newton-Conover High lags the state in most other areas. Looking ahead, Discovery High School has slipped from its peak but remains a consistently strong 4-star school, while Newton-Conover High shows modest signs of stabilizing at a 2-star rating. Because Newton-Conover High enrolls about 83 percent of high school students, district averages closely resemble the larger school, and it is small Discovery High School that lifts the district's high school profile.
