Summary

O'Bannon High School serves 467 students in grades 7–12 in Greenville, Mississippi, as part of Western Line Schools, a district ranked 83rd out of 134 in the state. The school serves a student body where essentially all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a level of economic need shared by every nearby comparison school.

After more than a decade of 1-star ratings in the bottom quarter of Mississippi high schools, O'Bannon High School earned 2 stars for 2025–2026, jumping dramatically in state rankings. The school now sits ahead of same-district Riverside High School and nearby Greenville High School, while tracking close to Simmons High School and Leland High School. The school's standout subject is Algebra I, where 77.4% of students scored proficient — far above the state average and dramatically higher than Greenville (14.1%) and Riverside (34.1%). However, Biology and English II remain below state averages, and the prior year's English II results were particularly weak. O'Bannon also outperforms Riverside in every 7th and 8th grade subject tested.

Graduation and attendance are the most pressing concerns. O'Bannon's 4-year graduation rate fell to 76.2%, well below the state average of 89.2%, and chronic absenteeism (28.3%) remains above state and district averages, though it has improved significantly and is better than Riverside and Greenville. Class sizes are also growing: the student-teacher ratio rose to 17.5, the highest among comparison schools. Still, the school's recent academic gains — especially in math — show that meaningful progress is possible even in a high-poverty context. The challenge ahead is making sure those gains translate into diplomas and postsecondary readiness.
