Summary

Warrenton Elementary is a PK–6 elementary school in Vicksburg, MS, serving 311 students in the Vicksburg Warren School District, a mid-tier Mississippi district ranked 67th of 134 districts. Like nearly every school in the district, Warrenton serves a high-poverty student body — 100% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch — and it sits in the middle of a highly uneven set of nearby schools. It clearly outperforms lower-performing schools like South Park Elementary and Warren Central Intermediate, but trails top performers like Bovina Elementary and Bowmar Avenue.

Warrenton's clearest academic strength is 3rd grade math: in 2024-2025, 73.6% of Warrenton 3rd graders were proficient in math, more than 30 percentage points above the district average. Even after a dip in 2025-2026, 3rd grade math (60.9%) remains well above the district (42.5%) and state (48.8%). 5th grade science is another bright spot — proficiency jumped from 53.6% to 72.1%, placing Warrenton ahead of most nearby schools except Bovina and Bowmar. The school's 5th grade students also improved dramatically across all subjects in 2025-2026, a strong sign of momentum.

The bigger concern is upper elementary. Warrenton's 6th grade ELA proficiency is just 32.5%, far below the district (44.8%) and state (48.0%), and 4th grade math (34.3%) represents a sharp drop-off from 3rd grade. The school's statewide rank has been volatile — it peaked at the 61st percentile in 2018-2019, fell to the 34th percentile by 2024-2025, and has rebounded to the 47th percentile. On a positive note, chronic absenteeism has fallen from 30.6% in 2021-2022 to 18.8% in 2023-2024, matching Bovina's rate and well below the district average of 29.2%. Bovina, with the same 100% free/reduced lunch rate, ranks 10th in the state — proof that Warrenton's mid-tier performance is not predetermined by poverty. Replicating its early-grade success in upper elementary is the key to reaching the top tier of Mississippi schools.
