Summary

South Delta Elementary School in Rolling Fork, MS, serves 234 students in grades PK–5 and is part of the South Delta School District. The school recently earned a 1-star rating from the state, placing it in the 20th percentile of Mississippi elementary schools—a meaningful improvement from the previous two years, when it ranked in the single digits. All students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, making this an extremely high-poverty school, yet the student-teacher ratio is a relatively favorable 13:1. The school's performance essentially determines the entire district's rating, as it is the only tested school in the district.

When compared to Sanders Elementary School, its nearest comparable school in Hollandale about 17 miles away, South Delta comes out ahead in most subjects. In 4th-grade math, South Delta's proficiency rate of 30% was nearly triple Sanders' 10.3%. South Delta also led in 3rd and 4th grade ELA by 7–8 points. One of the most encouraging signs is a dramatic 24-point jump in 5th-grade ELA proficiency, from 25.9% to 50.0% in a single year. The school also maintains a slightly lower student-teacher ratio than Sanders (13:1 vs. 14.1:1). Chronic absenteeism, a concern for many high-poverty schools, stands at 23.2%—right at the state average of 23.9% and notably better than the district's overall rate of 34.1%.

Despite these gains, math remains the school's greatest academic challenge. Proficiency rates in 2025–2026 were 28.2% in 3rd grade, 30.0% in 4th grade, and just 20.0% in 5th grade—all far below state averages. Interestingly, 5th-grade science proficiency was 63.4%, a 43-point gap compared to math in the same grade. There is also a positive story emerging: the cohort that struggled in 4th grade rebounded strongly in 5th-grade ELA. However, with nearly one in four students still chronically absent and rankings well below the school's 2016–2017 peak, sustained focus on attendance and math instruction will be critical to turning this recent momentum into a lasting turnaround.
