Summary

Lake Middle School is a small rural school in Lake, Mississippi, serving 237 students in grades 5 through 8 within the Scott County School District. Over the past decade, the school has transformed from a low-performing school into a consistently above-average one, climbing from the 40th percentile in 2015-16 to the 74th percentile with a four-star rating in 2025-26 — a remarkable turnaround for a school where nearly all students (98.7%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Lake's strongest results come in the later grades and in math. In 2025-26, 8th grade math proficiency reached 74.2%, compared to 50.0% for the district and 51.4% for the state. Science (74.1%) and ELA (56.4%) also far exceeded state averages. The school's Algebra I program is exceptional: 100% of students scored proficient for three of the past four years. When compared to nearby schools, the gap is striking — neighboring Hawkins Middle School posted just 19.4% proficiency in 8th grade math, and N H Pilate Middle School had 30.1%. Within its own district, Bettye Mae Jack Middle School trails far behind despite similar poverty levels. Only Union Middle School can match Lake in grades 5-7, but Lake pulls ahead decisively in 8th grade across every subject.

The school's biggest challenges are chronic absenteeism, which has climbed to 25.8% (above the state average of 23.9% but below the district's 33.6%), and year-to-year swings in scores that come with a small student body. For example, 8th grade ELA dropped from 55.7% to 28.1% in one year before rebounding to 56.4%. Parents should look at multi-year trends rather than any single year. Overall, Lake Middle School is a standout example of a high-poverty rural school achieving well above state averages through sustained improvement and a strong focus on math and 8th-grade outcomes.
