Summary

Eastlawn Elementary is a PK–4 school in Pascagoula, MS, serving 337 students as part of the Pascagoula-Gautier School District, a district rated 4 stars and ranked 35th out of 134 districts in Mississippi. The school serves a majority low-income population — 66% of students qualified for free/reduced lunch in 2024-2025 — and maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.9, lower than several nearby schools such as Gautier Elementary (14.4), Arlington Elementary (14.8), and Jackson Elementary (14.7).

Eastlawn Elementary's state ranking has declined dramatically over the past decade. The school earned a 5-star, 90th-percentile ranking in 2016-2017, but by 2025-2026 it had fallen to a 2-star rating, ranking 261st out of 377 Mississippi elementary schools (31st percentile). That places it near the bottom of its own district — only Arlington Elementary ranks lower among district elementary schools, while Beach Elementary (rank 20), Lake Elementary (rank 51), and Gautier Elementary (rank 94) are top performers. Test scores reflect this slide: 3rd-grade math proficiency is 27.8% versus the district's 45.2% and the state's 48.8%, and 3rd-grade ELA also trails significantly. That is a sharp drop from just a year earlier, when 3rd-grade math was at 65.6% — above the state average.

There are encouraging signs, however. Eastlawn Elementary's 4th-grade math proficiency (51.6%) matches the state average and exceeds several higher-ranked schools, including Arlington Elementary (39.6%) and Central Elementary (45.7%). The school also outperforms schools in the neighboring Moss Point School District, such as Escatawpa Upper Elementary, by wide margins in both math and reading. Chronic absenteeism (19.5%) has risen since before the pandemic but remains below both district and state averages. With a favorable student-teacher ratio and clear instructional strengths in 4th-grade math, Eastlawn has a solid foundation — but targeted attention to early-grade literacy and math is essential to reverse the downward trend.

Open Quote We absolutely love this school. My daughter is starting her fourth year here and it is such a fun and caring school. Everyone who works there treats you and your child like one big family. The principal cares so much about the children and lets them do so much fun stuff from talent shows, dances, programs, dress up days, jean days and class parties. It means so much to me that my daughter is excited to go to school. And a huge part of that is because the staff there, the principal, teachers, assistant teachers, office workers, cafeteria ladies, janitors, music teacher, librarian, art teacher, PE teacher, everyone. The curriculum is great as well, it's challenging but they are learning so much. I was worried about Common Core at first and was overwhelmed at the homework that was required every day, but it is actually quite manageable. I do like that they will put your child in the class that best fits their pace. There are advance classes and classes for children who need a little bit more one on one time to get the material. The building itself is also nice, there is a lot of natural light and it is covered in student artwork, I love that. Close Quote
