Summary

Natchez Early College @ County-Lin (NECCL) is a small four-year public high school in Natchez, MS, serving 174 students in grades 9–12 within the Natchez-Adams School District. Despite 100% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, this early college program has become a standout in the region, achieving a 100% graduation rate in three of the last five years and consistently outpacing state averages in English II proficiency—hitting 71% in 2025–2026 versus the state's 49.3%.

The contrast with nearby Natchez High School (NHS) is striking. In the 2025–2026 school year, NECCL posted proficiency rates of 57.7% in Algebra I, 71% in English II, and 57.8% in Biology, while NHS managed just 29%, 26.6%, and 25.1%, respectively. NECCL's U.S. History proficiency of 54.7% (2024–2025) also topped NHS's 48.6%. The graduation gap is equally dramatic—100% versus 86.2%—and NECCL accomplishes this even with a larger student–teacher ratio (20.4 vs. 12.1). Chronic absenteeism at NHS runs at 29.2%, far above the state average of 23.9%, while NECCL's last reported figure was just 5.6%, pointing to a much stronger attendance culture.

What makes NECCL's success particularly compelling is the early college model itself. With just 174 students, the school creates a focused, college-prep environment that appears to drive engagement and achievement despite a 100% economically disadvantaged population. The school has climbed as high as 45th in Mississippi's state rankings (a 4-star rating in 2022–2023) and currently sits in the 55th percentile—a full 53 points above NHS's 2nd percentile. While recent U.S. History scores have slipped from a stellar 88.6% in 2022–2023 to 54.7% in 2024–2025, NECCL remains a powerful example of how school culture and structure can overcome economic barriers.
