Summary

Leake County High School in Walnut Grove, Mississippi, is a small combined secondary school serving 266 students in grades 7 through 12 as part of the Leake County School District. It is the only school in the surrounding area that serves middle school students — nearby Leake Central High School, Union High School, Lake High School, Choctaw Central High School, and Forest High School all serve only grades 9-12. The student body is nearly 100% economically disadvantaged, but a favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.8 to 1 means class sizes are relatively small.

There are several bright spots worth noting. The graduation rate of 93.8% for 2024-2025 outpaces both the state average (89.2%) and the district average (82.1%). The school also consistently outperforms its same-district counterpart, Leake Central High School, with a higher graduation rate, lower chronic absenteeism, and stronger proficiency in Algebra I, Biology, and English II. Biology is a particular strength, with proficiency hovering around 50% in recent years, and in 2024-2025 the school posted a standout 81.9% Algebra I proficiency rate.

The main challenges are rising chronic absenteeism (32.4%) and year-to-year swings in test scores, which are amplified by the small student body. For context, nearby Union High School — serving a similarly high-poverty population — posted much stronger results, including 86.7% Algebra I and 78.1% Biology proficiency. Still, Leake County's strong graduation rate and small class sizes give it a solid foundation to build on.
