Summary

Moselle Elementary School is a pre-kindergarten through sixth grade school in Moselle, MS, serving 554 students in the unincorporated community as part of the Jones County School District. The school earned a 4-star rating in 2025-2026 and is currently ranked 59th out of 377 elementary schools in the state — its best showing in the past decade and a jump from the 67th percentile the year before. Moselle consistently exceeded district and state proficiency rates in English language arts, math, and science across nearly every grade level tested.

With a student-teacher ratio of 12.4 to 1, Moselle offers smaller class sizes than many neighboring schools, including South Jones Elementary School (14.7 to 1), Rowan Elementary (16.6 to 1), and Petal Elementary 3-4 (13.3 to 1). The school also stands out in 5th grade science, where 87.3% of students met proficiency targets — well above the state average of 71.5% and above nearby schools like South Jones Elementary School (73.5%) and Longleaf Elementary (66.0%). Those results are especially notable because Moselle serves a student population with higher economic need: 71.5% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, compared to 62.4% at South Jones and 56.5% at Longleaf. Despite that, Moselle outperformed South Jones on nearly every test in the most recent school year.

One area of concern is attendance. Moselle’s chronic absenteeism rate was 23.4% in 2023-2024, meaning roughly one in four students missed substantial school time. That rate is higher than nearby elementary schools and has risen since 2018-2019, when it was about 8%. The free and reduced-price lunch percentage also dropped sharply in recent years, likely due to changes in federal meal reporting rather than a sudden shift in family income. All of this makes Moselle’s academic success worth a closer look: the school is producing results that rival schools in Mississippi’s most highly rated districts while dealing with higher poverty and absenteeism. If attendance improves, Moselle appears poised for even stronger gains.
